The next morning was a bit hectic for us. After breakfast in bed, we headed to the city centre, but we quickly discovered that our GoPro was dead. Dominik decided to go back to our hotel for a new battery, and while I was waiting for him to come back, I thought about all the places I wanted to visit in Vienna… But because we were visiting the city for the weekend, I ultimately decided that I didn’t want to overwhelm us with a strict itinerary. Sometimes it’s nice to wander around the city and go with the flow. And that’s exactly what we did.
Vienna’s architecture is undeniably captivating. No matter where you go, you will find buildings with incredible architecture. The Rathaus, with its stunning Neo-Gothic style, and the Hofburg Castle, a majestic palace complex, are just a couple of examples of Vienna’s architectural treasures. We enjoyed walking the streets and seeing the buildings enriched with history.
However, it was not the architecture, but the Austrian charm that captivated me. The cafes, music, horse carriages and street food are what make Vienna one of my favourite places to visit! Burggarten, a park with beautifully landscaped gardens, was full of people enjoying the peaceful, sunny day.
After a couple of hours of walking and soaking in the sun, we decided it was time to try some Austrian traditional sweet delicacies! We found a cute restaurant called Verde and we ordered Sachertorte, a traditional Viennese chocolate cake with an apricot jam, and Kaiserschmarrn, caramelized bite-sized pancakes. Both were delicious and we enjoyed them very much.
As if that wasn’t enough, after our break for something sweet, we decided to walk the streets again and pick up some street food! Dominik and I are big fans of street food so when we saw a food cart on the way to our next stop, we had to go try something! We didn’t order any traditional Austrian food, but close enough – a currywurst!
Once we were happy enough to continue our adventure, we headed to Belvedere Palace. This historic complex consists of two Baroque palaces, the Upper Belvedere and the Lower Belvedere, and is well-known for its collection of Austrian art and picturesque gardens. Every time I have the chance to visit a palace with gardens, I like to spend my time outside. There’s something enchanting about the beautiful landscape. It transforms you right into the past.
After getting lost in the gardens of Belvedere Palace, we headed back to the city centre for a quick Frittatensuppe, a soup with strips of thin pancakes, and then back to our hotel!
