It wouldn’t be us if we didn’t have unexpected issues the next morning. On our way to Rome, the train was delayed by almost two hours because of some road works and our Colosseum tour was cancelled. After years of travel, I came to realize that even if you’d like to be organized, sometimes you need to go with the flow and be flexible. Even if you’re an itinerary freak like me. Shit happens.
We checked into our hotel a couple of hours later and then decided to find a spot for us to have a late breakfast. We both ordered coffee and I also got Cannoli siciliani al pistacchio, something I’ve always wanted to try. It was delicious.
I was a bit disappointed that we weren’t able to tour the Colosseum and Forum Romanum, the queues were insane, but we stopped by the Fontana di Trevi. I checked an item off of my bucket list and threw a coin in the fountain. Also, all I could think of was the scene from Lizzie McGuire’s movie. Dream come true, haha.
For the rest of the day, we walked around the city and enjoyed each other’s company. We tried another pizza, but it was incomparable with the one from Naples! The first day in Rome was a success!
The next morning, we headed straight for the bus to Vatican City. I’m not a big fan of museums, but we really wanted to tick off another country from our list, so we decided to go and it was worth it. We explored all the museums, visited Sistine Chapel and walked around St. Peter’s Square. It was a perfect day trip.
Later in the day, we headed back to the Colosseum to check it out once again and decided that it would be perfect to end the day by having a nice meal with a view of the world’s famous amphitheatre. We both ordered Aperol Spritz, a drink that we came to love in Italy and tried new traditional dishes. As the sun was setting down and we walked the streets of Rome, we both agreed that Rome was definitely a city that deserves its great reputation.
