The last day of us driving in our camper van was bittersweet. For the past week, it had become our home and saying goodbye to it was not easy. Some of the nights were rough, but I really loved the adventure and it definitely made me rethink my travel planning going forward.
We woke up early and headed to Reykjavík for our final tour – an ATV ride. We put overalls and helmets on and after a quick training, we hit the road. The weather was cold and rainy, but it added to the vibe of the whole experience. It was the first time I’d ever been on ATV and I loved every minute of it.
Unfortunately, after the ride was time to hand in our keys to the camper van and check into our apartment in Reykjavík. The process went smoothly and after a quick lunch, we were ready to relax our bodies in Sky Lagoon.
Sky Lagoon is a man-made geothermal spa located in downtown Reykjavík. The experience was everything we needed and more. After a week of sleeping in a van, this was well-deserved relaxation. The water was almost 40°C and the lagoon itself was beautiful – surrounded by black rocks with an incredible view of the sea. We sipped our drinks and watched the sundown in awe.
The most memorable and best part of the lagoon was the seven-step ritual. It costs a little bit extra but it’s worth the money. First, you relax in the lagoon, then, after you dip your body in cold water, you visit a sauna with a breathtaking view and then continue to refresh your body in a cold mist. After you scrub your body with a sea salt scrub, you enter a steam room and finish the ritual with a shower.
Travelling through a country in a camper hits you differently. It’s something that I wanted to do to push my boundaries and get out of my comfort zone. Having this experience in Iceland was a dream come true and being able to do it with Dominik was priceless!
