Iceland Ring Road: Day Four (Diamond Beach & Ice Cave Tour)

The hurricane passed overnight. We booked a boat tour a couple of months prior, so we headed to the meeting point – Diamond beach. Visiting Diamond beach was the most memorable travel experience in my life so far. I will never forget the moment I set my eyes on all the icebergs in the distance and the ones scattered across the black beach. It was also one of the funniest days in Iceland because we realized we fucked up.

We managed to find the group for our boat tour fairly quickly and five minutes later, we were sitting in a huge monster truck heading inland. I think it was twenty minutes of us driving away from the beach when I realized that something was wrong. An American couple sitting next to us confirmed our worries – this wasn’t a boat tour, but Ice Cave Tour. Somehow, we became black passengers.

Looking back, there were plenty of things that screamed we weren’t at the correct location, but we chose to ignore them all. We did the only thing we could think of – we blended in. The tour ended up being fun. The inside of the glacier was gorgeous for its blue ice and the tour guide was very friendly. Ironically, my favourite part of the tour was the ride in the monster truck. Such a cool experience.

After the tour, we decided to hang around and see all the icebergs surrounding us. It felt like we were on a completely different planet. I’ve never seen anything like it with my own eyes. All I could think of was how people are not talking enough about Iceland and its nature.

Later on, we decided to find something to eat. There were food stands near the parking lot, so we decided to grab a few hot dogs. Dominik ordered two classic ones, but I went for a lobster hot dog. Surprisingly, I really liked it. Because we had mistaken our tour, we were behind our schedule and had to hit the road again. We got into our campsite pretty late and after the warmest shower I’ve had in Iceland so far, we went to bed.
