Visiting a geothermal area in Hverir felt like walking on Mars. At the foot of the Namafjall volcanic mountain, there are mud pools, steam vents and an orange landscape that looks out of this world. The air smelled funny, like eggs, but we had so much fun there! For the first time, I got over my anxiety and took out my tripod and snapped a few pictures of me and Dominik.
When we got back to the parking lot, two American tourists came to us to ask us about our camper van. We got talking and they asked us about the price and our upcoming plans for the road trip. We even showed them the inside of the camper van. It’s random conversations like these that make the travel even more memorable for me. You never know who you will meet.
After visiting Hverir, we stopped at Mývatn lake for lunch. After five days of eating instant noodles and rice, we craved something tastier. We found a small bistro with fish and chips so our lunch was sorted.
Our next tour on our itinerary was horse riding in Salvík. I’ve always wanted to ride a horse and it felt like a good idea to do it in Iceland. The tour lasted about two hours and there were ten more people with us from all over the world. We rode the horses on the beach surrounded by the most incredible scenery. The calmness of this place was the best part of it. Everybody switched off their brains and enjoyed the peace. The people barely talked and I could feel all the stress leaving my body.
After we finished our tour, we were encouraged to give our horses snacks that were ready for them back on the farm. We then said our goodbyes and hit the road again.
It was a beautiful ride. We decided to stop a couple of times to watch the sundown. At one point it felt like driving through the mountains in Jurassic Park. We found a spa hotel with a restaurant and ordered soups before returning to our campsite.
