How could I describe our trip to Sweden? Short, but sweet. While visiting Denmark for a weekend away, Dominik and I decided to pay a visit to Sweden, given it was only a short train ride away. To be completely honest with you, we loved the idea of checking yet another country off our bucket list, and on our to-do list that day was only one thing – to try the traditional Swedish meatballs. And so we packed our passports and hopped on a train from Copenhagen to spend a half-day in Malmö.
It’s always been difficult for me not to plan trips. I’m a very organized person when it comes to travel, and I love to research all the places I want to visit beforehand. This time, however, we found ourselves in the city of Malmö without any plan whatsoever. We were also a bit apprehensive about the trip, aware of the fact that Sweden wasn’t as safe as Denmark, but we ended up being very happy with our decision! Our first stop was Malmö’s Old Town.
I must say that I was impressed. If you’re visiting Malmö, the Old Town is a must! The historic buildings, cobblestone streets, and charming atmosphere all reminded me of stepping back in time or wandering through a storybook village. We wandered through the maze of beautiful streets, taking in the vibrant colours around us. Unfortunately for us, our exploration was halted as it started to rain, so we began our hunt for the best Swedish meatballs in the city!
A few Google searches later, we were seated at a table in a restaurant called Bullen. With its rich history, Bullen became a popular restaurant and a place that prides itself on traditional Swedish cuisine. If the walls could talk, even after a hundred years of listening, they would tell you that the food here is the best in the city. I finally tried the traditional veal meatballs, and I was impressed! Served with creamy mashed potatoes, lingonberries, and a whisky cream sauce, each bite was a delightful fusion of flavours. After our bellies were full, we washed down the food with a pint of beer and proceeded to wander further into the heart of the city.
We took a stroll through Malmö’s Slottsparken, a public park located right behind Malmö Castle, and came across a small, but impressive, Castle Mill. This historic windmill is a well-preserved gem of the city and definitely a must-visit!
Our time in Sweden was coming to an end. We said our goodbyes to the city and boarded the train back to Copenhagen. Even though our time in Sweden was short, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the chance to immerse ourselves in a new culture, if only for a day!
